On the second Monday in October, Americans celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day, also known as Columbus Day.

Indigenous Peoples Day honors the contributions and legacy of those who lived here long before Christopher Columbus falsely claimed to have discovered the Americas. President Joe Biden formally recognized Indigenous Peoples Day in 2021 by signing a proclamation stating that federal policies have been “systematically aimed at assimilating and displacing Native peoples and eradicating Native cultures.”

Some states celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day officially, others celebrate it with proclamations. More than 100 cities have completely replaced Columbus Day with this holiday.

Many students across the country will be home from school, while others may still have classes. Other office workers are also celebrating the holiday with a day off, but for those who still need to run errands, here's what's open and closed on Monday, October 14th.

Monday is a Federal Reserve holiday. However, the markets will be open – trading will take place on the Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange.

Of the major US banks, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank branches are closing.

Chase Bank and TD Bank will be open for Indigenous Peoples Day.

As always, you can use online banking or ATM services.

The United States Postal Service remains closed and is not delivering mail or packages.

However, if you need to send mail, UPS and FedEx operate mostly as normal. Service changes will occur for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy. The UPS works fully as usual.

Most major retailers such as Target, Walmart and Kroger will be open. Be sure to check with local businesses for their opening hours.

Because it is a government holiday, government buildings will be closed – think the DMV, libraries, courts and offices.
