Review of the third quarter of the Los Angeles Chargers and the Denver Broncos

Nothing could stop Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers from starting this game. With the score 20-0 at halftime, they would get the ball to start the second half. Only two stops by the Denver Broncos defense on third down resulted in field goals. Otherwise, the Chargers did whatever they wanted in this game.

On the Chargers' first drive of the second half, Denver's defense finally got a third down stop out of field goal range. That led to the Chargers' first punt of the game.

Bo Nix and the Broncos offense got some momentum on their first drive, thanks almost entirely to Nix and his legs. He was certainly sacked by Bud Dupree, but broke that tackle and headed for a 21-yard scramble for a first down. Unfortunately, Javonte Williams dropped a long pass on the open screen that would have gained a ton of yards and ultimately killed the drive as back-to-back penalties set up a third-and-20 yard.

A good punt from Riley Dixon brought the Chargers back to their own nine yard line for their next drive. The Broncos' pass rush fizzled out on the first two snaps, leading to incompletions. On third-and-10, Herbert went deep for a 29-yard completion with Riley Moss in coverage.

Two plays later, after a near interception by Brandon Jones, the Chargers faced another third-and-long. Needing eight yards, they got a great play from Herbert for another chain completion. There was simply nothing the Broncos defense could do on third down to stop the Chargers.

Those third-down conversions are a tough one, but they eventually got a sack from Nik Bonitto that got the Chargers into a third-and-16 play that they eventually stopped. However, they found themselves within field goal range and were able to extend their lead with less than three minutes left in the third quarter.

Chargers 23, Broncos 0.

The quarter ended with the Chargers in Broncos territory hoping to extend their lead.
