Former Steelers HC calls on Arthur Smith to take over offense for Justin Fields

Pittsburgh Steelers fans have become accustomed to seeing a conservative Steelers offense in recent years. This season is no different. But wait, things are different. There is a new offensive coordinator in Arthur Smith and a new quarterback in Justin Fields.

Even with these improvements, the Steelers offense still remains in neutral. But this time it feels like Smith brought it upon himself. He's got an athlete in Fields and he's got a crazy athlete in wide receiver George Pickens, but he seems content to field a running game that hasn't been effective at all.

Former Steelers head coach Bill Cowher was on the pregame show and pleaded with Smith to open things up for Fields and give him a chance to make some plays.

“Arthur Smith, open the offense,” Cowher said. “I think give him a chance to spread the field.” Go empty-handed, don't crowd. Use him now and give him a chance to develop as a quarterback.”

Cowher fully understands how having an athletic quarterback takes you out of your comfort zone. He did something similar with Kordell Stewart, so he has some insights that Smith needs to hear.
