Mets vs. Dodgers Game 1 Score, Live Updates: NLCS kicks off in Los Angeles with Shohei Ohtani looking for his first World Series trip

The National League Championship Series is here and it's a massive coast-to-coast duel between the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Mets clinched one of the final NL wild card spots on the final day of the regular season before defeating the Brewers and Phillies so far this postseason. The Dodgers were one of the top teams in the Netherlands – and in all of baseball – all season long.

The Dodgers won four of the six games these two teams played this season, and Shohei Ohtani was a key factor for Los Angeles. In five of those games, the National League MVP favorite posted a .316/.458/.684 batting average with two home runs, six RBI and five walks in 24 plate appearances.

On Sunday, Jack Flaherty (0-1, 5.1 IP, 6.75 ERA in the 2024 postseason) started for the Dodgers against Kodai Senga (0-0, 2.0 IP, 4.50 ERA) for the Mets at Dodger Stage. You can watch the game on Fox.

Live19 updates

  • The Mets recorded their first scoreless inning on the mound, leaving the third inning trailing 3-0.

  • The New York bullpen is in for a long day. Reed Garrett is out after 1 1/3 innings to relieve starter Kodai Senga. David Peterson takes the mound with two outs and no man in the top of the third.

  • Jack Flaherty is still perfect

Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty is perfect after his first pass through the Mets' lineup. He was eliminated in the third when Francisco Alvarez had a strikeout. That's four strikeouts and zero baserunners allowed in three innings. The Dodgers lead 3-0.

  • Here is a rare sight. Shoehei Ohtani was caught trying to steal second base to end the second inning. It's the first time since July that the presumptive NL MVP has been caught stealing. He has been successful in his 36 attempts so far.

The Dodgers take a 3-0 lead in the second inning.

  • Kodai Senga is ready

It's a short outing for Mets starter Kodai Senga. He issued a leadoff walk to Gavin Lux, who came over to score on a single by Shohei Ohtani. That's a 3-0 lead for the Dodgers with one out in the second half.

Senga walked four and allowed two hits and three earned runs. He covers Ohtani at first base. He was also charged with a pitch clock violation. A tough Game 1 for Senga that only lasted 30 pitches.

  • The fact that Freddie Freeman rounded the bases with a bad ankle was cause for celebration at home plate.

  • Jack Flaherty is in business. Six ups and six downs for the Dodgers starter, who has three strikeouts and a 2-0 lead after the second inning. The Dodgers come to the bottom of the second and look to extend their early lead.

  • Kodai Senga issued consecutive walks to Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez, and the Dodgers made him pay. Max Muncy scored with a two-out single against Betts and Freeman, giving the Dodgers a 2-0 lead after one inning.

  • Kodai Senga runs the bases with one out and the Mets are in early trouble.

  • Who will the Mets deal with Ohtani?

A key storyline to keep an eye on during the NLCS is the way the Mets look to take on Shohei Ohtani towards the end of games. The Padres kept Ohtani quiet in the NLDS (he hit 2 in his last 15 games) because they could use dominant southpaw Tanner Scott in the later innings.

The Mets only have two left-handed relievers on their roster (David Peterson and Danny Young), neither of whom are obvious weapons against Ohtani. Young was not a pitcher in the NLDS and Peterson was primarily used in multi-inning spurts.

  • Kodai Senga gets the win for the Mets to go up against the Dodgers MVP, who has Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman leading the way.

  • A quick first for Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty. In a 1-2-3 inning, Francisco Lindor, Mark Vientos and Brandon Nimmo singled.

  • It's an ideal evening for October baseball in Los Angeles. 72 degrees and clear skies.

  • We're just moments away from first pitch. Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty warms up on the mound.

  • Manny Ramirez in the house

Manny Ramirez played three seasons for the Dodgers from 2008 to 2010 and still has affection for the team.

  • Fly over Dodger Stadium

  • Game 1 will influence the Dodgers' pitching strategy for Game 2

How Game 1 goes for the Dodgers could affect their pitching strategy for Game 2. Walker Buehler is the likely Game 2 starter, but manager Dave Roberts said it could be a bullpen game with Buehler then starting Game 3.

  • Dodgers lineup, Game 1

Tommy Edman starts his third straight game at shortstop since Game 4 of the NLDS

  • Mets lineup, Game 1

Mets hope to get three innings out of Kodai Senga in Game 1:
