The Hunter's Moon rising this week will be the brightest supermoon of the year

October's full moon is often called the Hunter's Moon, and this year it occurs when our celestial neighbor is at its closest and gains supermoon status.

The upcoming full moon will occur at 7:26 a.m. EDT on Thursday, according to NASA. The moon will be below the horizon, so you'll have to wait until after sunset Thursday evening to see it. The good news is that the moon will appear full Tuesday evening through Friday morning.

New mini-moon is expected to orbit Earth, but won't stay in the neighborhood for long

October's full moon is a supermoon because it occurs at perigee, the moon's greatest distance from Earth.

On the night of October 16th, the moon reaches its greatest distance from Earth and becomes full moon on the morning of October 17th.

According to NASA's Gordon Johnston, this is the third of four consecutive supermoons and will be the brightest, but only by a tiny margin. The next full moon, known as the Beaver Moon, will also be a supermoon on November 15th.

According to the Farmer's Almanac, the Hunter's Moon occurs after the Harvest Moon in September, and there are records of the name dating back to 1710.

Unlike the other full moon names of the year, the Harvest and Hunter's Moons are named after the season and are not associated with the month.
