Columbus Day commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in North America in October 1942. But in more recent history, many celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day instead, which aims to shift attention from the colonizers to the colonized.

What is Indigenous Peoples Day?

“Since the late 1980s, Indigenous Peoples Day has grown in popularity as a replacement for Columbus Day. “Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October and honors the indigenous communities that have lived in the Americas for thousands of years,” according to US News and World Report.

“It celebrates Native American culture, history and contributions to American society. It also aims to correct a “whitewashed” American history that has glorified Europeans like Columbus.”
