San Diego loses to last place Houston

As if the sports weekend couldn't get any worse after the Padres' playoff exit to the Dodgers, the San Diego Wave lost 2-0 to the last-place Houston Dash on Sunday at Snapdragon Stadium. The chances of San Diego making it to the postseason for the third straight year are now more than slim. In addition to winning their two remaining games, the Wave will need a few other things to prevail, including Bay FC losing in its two games, Racing Louisville losing or drawing against Portland, and losing or that The Utah Royals draw in one of their games with two games remaining and still find a way to finish ahead of Angel City, which is one point ahead of the team.

Whether or not the off-field issues surrounding allegations from former employees of the front office have distracted the players, the fact remains that the team has underperformed this season after falling short after winning the Supporters' Shield started with high expectations in 2023.

What makes the task even more daunting is that the next league opponent is fourth-seeded Kansas City Current, which has already secured home-field advantage in the quarterfinals with a chance of an equally high second place in the standings. The last time Kansas City and San Diego played each other was March 23 at Snapdragon Stadium, with Current winning 2-1.

San Diego Wave will face Club América in the Concacaf W Champions Cup on Wednesday, October 16th.
