Is there mail on Columbus Day? Post Office, UPS, FedEx Opening Hours Today

Monday marks Columbus Day, which celebrates the date Italian explorer Christopher Columbus arrived in the Americas from Europe in 1492.

Although the holiday has sparked controversy due to the impact of colonialism, many still celebrate it as a piece of American history or a way to honor Native Americans.

The federal holiday, also known as Indigenous Peoples Day, impacts the mail as many carriers close or significantly change their office hours.

Because of this, Americans should keep in mind that they may not receive mail as usual on Monday, and regular businesses such as stores and restaurants may also be closed.

Post Office

All post offices in the United States are to remain closed on Monday and regular deliveries of mail and packages have been suspended.

There are some postal services that will continue to be available online. This includes the sale of stamps, boxes and accessories. You can continue to collect shipping labels and schedule package pickup after Columbus Day.

FedEx

Unlike the US Post Office, FedEx remains open on Columbus Day.

The company said its FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy services will have modified services, but you should expect all other deliveries to proceed as usual.

UPS

Similar to FedEx, UPS will continue to offer pickup and delivery services during the holidays.

However, UPS SurePost and Mail Innovations deliveries will experience a one-day delay due to the holiday.

All UPS stores were expected to remain open Monday.

Other companies

Several other stores will also experience disruptions due to Columbus Day.

Expect most banks to remain closed. These include Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank. However, digital banking services and ATMs should still be available.

While most retailers and grocery stores will remain open on Monday, you should call the store or restaurant to check their hours before heading there.

A previous study by the Pew Research Center found that 21 states and Washington, D.C. pay their employees for Columbus Day as a holiday. Generally, all federal employees have the day off as a paid holiday and these offices remain closed.

Although Indigenous Peoples Day is not technically a federal holiday, President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation recognizing the day for three years.

“On Indigenous Peoples Day, we honor the strength, courage and resilience of indigenous peoples,” the president said in a statement Friday. “We celebrate the tremendous contributions of Indigenous communities to the world. And we recommit to respecting tribal sovereignty and self-determination and working to usher in a new era of our nation-to-nation relations.”
