Dirt Cheap is filing for bankruptcy and plans to close all stores by the end of the year

Channel Control Merchants, the parent company of Dirt Cheap and Bargain Hunt – headquartered in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, where the company was founded – filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Thursday, October 10.

The company, which includes Dirt Cheap, Bargain Hunt and Dirt Cheap Building Supplies – jointly incorporated as HDC Holdings II LLC and originally known as Hudson's – plans to close all stores to pay off its debts.

With locations in Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Texas, Georgia and Tennessee, the company has built its business on bargain hunters purchasing used, name-brand and private label items for up to 90 percent of regular retail prices.

Dirt Cheap is considered a secondary market retailer, meaning they purchase items from regular retailers who have had difficulty selling those items through normal distribution channels. This may be due to purchasing errors, competition or other economic factors.

Since the final court hearing date is November 7, 2024, all stores are expected to be closed until the end of the year.

Some “store closing sales” are already being advertised on the company’s official Facebook page. The company's official website, ilovedirtcheap.com, was not operational on Monday.
