Did Texans HC DeMeco Ryans overshadow Bills QB Josh Allen?

There's no denying that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen played a terrible game in Houston last week. Allen completed an eye-popping nine passes on 30 attempts against the Texans defense. All afternoon, Allen was unable to connect with his receivers and found little protection on his offensive line. To say he is ready to go beyond this achievement would be an understatement.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans also came out of Week 5 with a surprising moment that appears to indirectly discount Allen's overall merits as one of the NFL's best quarterbacks. According to Jonathan M. Alexander, Ryans said of Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love, “He's going to be the best quarterback we've seen this year.”

Oh really, now? Yes, Allen didn't have a great game, more of a memorable game because of what it was missing and not because of what it did to the Texans. Does that mean Love is now a better quarterback than Allen based on one game? Apparently the same goes for Ryans.

Even if he's just using it as anti-bulletin board fodder, it's an odd statement. It would be just as strange for Ryans to claim that Love isn't nearly as talented as Allen, especially before their match in Week 7. So why even say anything on the subject?

Let's look at the current stats for Allen and Love, which include an extra game for Love:

  • Love has thrown four more touchdowns than Allen (12 to Allen's eight)
  • Allen has two rushing touchdowns (Love has zero)
  • Love has 9 carries for 29 yards; Allen has 26 attempts for 160 yards (and those touchdowns)
  • Allen passed in five games: 79 of 131 (60.3%) for 945 yards, 8 touchdowns
  • Love passes in six games: 88 of 146 (58.9%) for 1,131 yards, 12 TDs, 6 INTs

So in another game, Love has thrown for 186 more yards, four more touchdowns (the number he threw yesterday in Week 6) while completing less than 60% of his passes. If we want to consider QBs' win-loss records in the regular season, Jordan Love is 11-11. Josh Allen has a 66-32 regular season record.

Sure, DeMeco… you do. One can only hope Josh Allen gets another opportunity to show Ryans everything he can do to an NFL defense.
