49ers sign veteran safety

Reinforcements for the security position have arrived.

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly signing veteran safety Adrian Amos, pro Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports. Amos is entering his tenth year in the league, most recently with the Houston Texans and New York Jets in 2023.

Amos began his career with the Chicago Bears from 2015 to 2018. He then signed with the Green Bay Packers, where he played from 2019 to 2022. Pro Football Focus named him All-Pro twice (2017, 2020) during his career. He's not the top player he was four years ago, but he should provide some decent depth.

The 49ers' signing of Amos is interesting because it could mean a thing or two. The immediate reaction is that the safety position hurts. Talanoa Hufagna was placed on the injured list with torn wrist ligaments. Rookie Malik Mustapha, arguably their best safety this season, suffered an ankle injury in the Week 6 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

The signing of Amos could mean the ankle injury will keep Mustapha out of Week 7 against the Kansas City Chiefs and possibly longer. Either way, the position will be tight due to injuries. It's a good idea for the 49ers to add depth, which is why they signed Amos. However, there could be a different or additional reason why the 49ers are signing him.

It could be that the 49ers are not happy with the performance of their safeties this year. They were so sure and confident that the position would be in order before the 2024 regular season. It turns out that the position is not as strong as they imagined. It has to be better. That's why Justin Simmons was a great idea for the 49ers coming into training camp looking to upgrade the position.

Unfortunately, it might be unfair to expect Amos to exit considering he is at the end of his career. The good thing is that he is familiar with the 49ers defensive system. Last year he spent time with the Texans under DeMeco Ryans and the Jets under Robert Saleh. So he should be fit and therefore fit in quickly. Don't be surprised if he makes his debut on Sunday against the Chiefs.
