49ers News: Immediate reaction to the 27:24 loss against the Rams

The San Francisco 49ers fell to 1-2 on the season after a narrow 27-24 away loss to the Los Angeles Rams and squandered a 14-point lead in an embarrassing defeat.

It was a rough day for the 49ers. They started strong but could never do enough to put the game away before penalties, poor coverage, drops and special teams mistakes hurt the team. The Rams took advantage and eventually won with a field goal with two seconds left in the game.

After the game, 49ers analyst Rohan Chakravarthi shared his immediate reaction to the team's 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams and pointed out the key takeaways for the team going forward.qqqqq

attack

If you had seen Brock Purdy complete 22/30 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns, while also running for 41 yards, you would have expected the 49ers to win the game.

Although Purdy had a fumble that was more Colton McKivitz's fault than his own, the 49ers quarterback still put in a strong performance and tried to lead his team to victory.

On the ground, Jordan Mason ran for 77 yards on 19 attempts, although his efficiency continued to decline in the second half as the Rams attempted to stop the run from behind.

In the air, Jauan Jennings was the star of the show, catching 11 of his 12 passes for 175 yards and scoring a whopping three touchdowns in what was undoubtedly the best game of the 49ers wide receiver's career.

Brandon Aiyuk finished second with five catches for 48 yards, but dropped the ball when it was thrown just behind him, forcing him to make a more difficult catch that the wideout couldn't get down.

But the offense made mistakes at the right time, which ultimately hurt the team.

Ronnie Bell had two ugly drops, the last of which late in the fourth quarter likely decided the game for the 49ers. Colton McKivitz was beaten regularly and had to fight a lot against rookie Jared Verse, and was largely responsible for San Francisco's only turnover of the day. The penalties were also killer, as a hold by Kyle Juszczyk on the second-to-last drive led to a 55-yard field goal attempt for Jake Moody that the kicker missed, allowing the Rams back into the game.

Overall, the offense was good enough to win for the most part, but then made some costly mistakes that contributed to the team's downfall in Week 3.

defense

The defense had its worst game of the season against the Rams, as the 49ers struggled to stop a Matthew Stafford-led passing attack that did not feature Cooper Kupp or Puka Nacua.

Instead, the Rams tried to pick opponents in the passing game, targeting cornerback Isaac Yiadom in particular, who caught all five balls aimed at him in the loss and also received a 48-yard penalty for pass interference, which led to the first point for Los Angeles.

DeVondre Campbell also had trouble in pass coverage, allowing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Kyren Williams on the same drive as Yiadom's penalty, cutting the lead to 14-7. Then, on the game's final drive, the linebacker was penalized for 25-yard pass interference, putting Los Angeles at the 49ers' 25-yard line and giving them excellent field position for the game-winning field goal.

Defensively, the 49ers had three sacks, but Stafford seemed comfortable in the pocket in the second half, leading to a masterful performance that saw Los Angeles score 20 points in the final 30 minutes. The Rams quarterback dismantled the 49ers' coverage and presented challenges for defensive coordinator Nick Sorensen.

Even top cornerback Charvarius Ward was targeted when Stafford hit TuTu Atwell with a 50-yard deep ball on the first play after the 49ers missed a field goal. Ward was in coverage on the play and was way out of position, leading to the explosive play. The Rams scored a touchdown shortly afterward, tying the game at 24-24.

Ultimately, the defense was no match for the opposition, who were missing several key players. They needed more pressure, as Stafford had an average of 3.13 seconds to throw. The coverage was poor, the Rams created timely explosive plays that led to points, and the penalties were deadly, allowing Los Angeles to push further forward and into the red zone.

Before Week 4, the 49ers have a number of questions to answer.
