Time for ALCS Game 2, live MLB playoffs updates

NEW YORK – Gerrit Cole has a simple task Tuesday night in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series: maintain his postseason winning record against Cleveland – and try to bury the Guardians before the venue moves west.

Cole, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner now in his fourth postseason as a Yankee, will look to extend his perfect playoff mark against Cleveland and give the Yankees a 2-0 lead in the ALCS.

Cole, 34, enters Game 2 against Cleveland with a 4-0 record and a 1.98 ERA in five starts, dating back to 2018, when Cleveland had a different nickname and Cole was a Houston Astro. But several patterns favor the Yankees on Tuesday night: New York has beaten Cleveland in its last six playoff series, dating back to a win in the ALCS in 1998 en route to the World Series title.

The Guardians are hoping to stop the bleeding after a 5-2 loss in Game 1 with right-hander Tanner Bibee, their No. 1 starter on a bullpen-dependent club. But Bibee will need to last at least five innings for the Guardians' heavyweights to come together; The only bright spot in their Game 1 loss was a night out for backup stars like rookie Cade Smith, who played in all five Division Series games.

Cleveland added an arm to its stable on Tuesday: right-hander Ben Lively was added to the roster as an injury replacement for Game 1 starter Alex Cobb, whose surgically repaired hip began to fade before he left in the third inning. However, Cobb is out for the year as he is ineligible to play on the World Series roster after being subbed in the middle of that series.
