WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin became the 60th player in NHL history to record 700 career assists, reaching the milestone with his second point Tuesday night in the Washington Capitals' game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Ovechkin had a second assist on Tom Wilson's power play goal early in the second period and then set up his linemate Aliaksei Protas to make it 3-1 a few minutes later. During the ensuing timeout, a video montage of his assists played on the arena's video boards, and Ovechkin waved to fans who gave him a standing ovation.

Ovechkin is second in his career with 853 goals and has three assists in his first two games of the season. The 39-year-old winger is still 42 goals short of breaking Wayne Gretzky's record, which seemed unassailable for a long time.
