Los Angeles Lakers rookie Bronny James gave an assessment of his preseason preparation so far in a conversation with reporters on Tuesday.

“For me, it’s just about getting comfortable,” he said. “Go out and get reps. I think that's the most important thing. Just to boost my confidence and feel more comfortable when I'm out there playing. I feel good. The numbers could be better. I just have to.” Strengthen my confidence.

The 20-year-old James has appeared in three preseason games so far in his career, averaging 0.7 points, one rebound, one block and 0.3 assists in 11.9 minutes per game.

That's not particularly surprising considering he averaged seven points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists while shooting just 32.7 percent from the field in six Summer League games. Or after averaging just 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game while shooting 36.6 percent from the field with USC.

So far, the younger James has done little to dispel the view held by some, fair or not, that he would not have been an NBA draft pick this offseason if his father had not been a superstar for the team that drafted him has selected.

“The expectations of the fan base, as well as LeBron and Rich Paul, for Bronny do not match the reality of his game,” an Eastern Conference executive told ESPN Baxter Holmes Beginning of October. “If they had any real idea of how far away Bronny was, they simply wouldn’t have done this.”

“The fact that this whole thing even made it this far is surreal,” a Western Conference executive added. “Analytically, if you just had the numbers on a page and didn't have a name attached to it, he wouldn't in any way, shape or form indicate being an NBA player. His metrics do not suggest he is an NBA player. There is literally nothing about him on paper – unless his name is on it – that makes sense.”

I wrote this in June for the draft guide profile on Bronny James. The easiest way to explain this for Lakers fans right now is don't expect him to be an NBA rotation player for the next few years and hope things go well in the G League to change that. pic.twitter.com/a5Rcelh5nh

However, Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised the younger James.

“He can do some things defensively at his size that are really unique and I think he can develop into a really disruptive defender,” he said told reporters after James' preseason debut. “That has been shown. He’s still figuring out who he is on offense. That's our job as a player development program, just to build him up. But honestly, he's so easy to train. He has a great soul and is just great.” I like being around him. He is a good player that we are happy to have in our program.

At this point, however, Bronny James doesn't look like a player who will consistently crack LA's rotation this season.
