(This story has been updated with new information).

Former Texas Tech wide receiver Danny Amendola honored the late Mike Leach on Tuesday's episode of “Dancing with the Stars.”

Amendola, a participant on the ABC program's 33rd season, played under Leach in Lubbock from 2004 to 2007, collecting 204 catches for 2,236 yards and 15 touchdowns. His best year statistically was the 2007 season, in which he caught 109 catches for 1,245 yards and six touchdowns for a Red Raiders team that went 9-4 and 4-4 in the Big 12.

According to Mississippi State University, where he was coaching at the time, Leach died in December 2022 from complications of heart disease. He was the first head coach at Texas Tech from 2000 to 2009. He also coached at Washington State from 2012-19 and Mississippi State from 2020-22.

Tuesday's episode was themed “Dedication Night” and detailed Amendola's tribute to his former coach. His routine earned him an overall score of 36 out of 40, with guest judge Mark Ballas contributing. He took first place overall that evening together with TV star Joey Graziadei.

Amendola, who won two Super Bowls in the NFL with the New England Patriots and is a member of the franchise's All-2010 team, performed his routine with Witney Carson to the song “Unsteady” by X Ambassadors. After his routine, Amendola said this about Leach:

“He told us to dream, that through hard work and dedication we could pay,” Amendola said on the show. “Being a coach is a very selfless job and I miss it a lot. … This is for him.”

Here's a look at Amendola's routine and subsequent interview:

All in all, it was a touching moment from Amendola, who – 17 years after his final season under Leach – still has obvious appreciation for the coach affectionately known as “the Pirate.”
