FOR IMMEDIATE PRESS RELEASE

THE PEOPLE'S ORGANIZATION FOR PROGRESS WILL REGISTER VOTERS ON THE LAST DAY FOR THE NOVEMBER ELECTION AND CALLS FOR REGISTRATION ON THE SAME DAY

The People's Organization For Progress (POP) will register voters tomorrow. This is the last day in New Jersey for the upcoming November election. Voter registration will be held on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the corner of Broad Street and Market Street (near 777 Broad Street).
Newark, New Jersey.

POP is a volunteer, grassroots organization committed to racial, social and economic justice. Voter registration has been conducted on Saturdays for eight months since March.

“We normally do voter registration on weekends. However, because the election on November 5th is so important, we have decided to be there tomorrow to give people one last opportunity to register,” said Lawrence Hamm, Chairman of the People's Organization For Progress.

“After tomorrow's filing deadline, we will shift gears and undertake activities and efforts to educate voters about the election, particularly who is running, what offices they are running for, important related issues and what is at stake,” said Hamm.

“In the final days before the election, we will focus our attention on voter mobilization. Voter registration and education is very important. However, if they don’t go to the polls and vote, it would all be in vain,” he said.

“All of us, both organizations and individuals who have conducted voter registration, must do everything we can to get the people we register to vote on Election Day. We can't wait this out. “The cost of not participating is too high,” he said.

“After this election is over, we must work to reform our voter registration system. One of the necessary reforms is same-day registration. There should be no registration deadline. People should be able to register on Election Day,” Hamm said.

“The way we do it now, the way we have done it for more than a hundred years, is outdated and should be changed. We have the skills, technology, information and systems that enable the implementation of this reform,” he said.

“A lot of people don't think about voting until Election Day and then they don't go because they're not registered. Same-day registration allows them to vote. “It will increase voter turnout and that will be good for the democratic process,” he said.

“Same-day registration is not a new idea. The state capital, Washington, DC, and 23 states have it. I urge our state representatives to pass legislation to make this a reality in New Jersey and the rest of the nation,” he said.
