FIRST ALERT: FROST AND FREEZE WARNINGS ISSUED

The National Weather Service has issued new frost and freeze warnings as temperatures fall into the upper 20s to mid 30s tonight.

A frost warning is active for hometowns along and west of the Blue Ridge Thursday morning. This is the same area that had a frost warning in effect this morning. If temperatures stay in the 20s for several hours, crops and plants could die.

A frost warning is active Thursday morning for areas east of the Blue Ridge. At low temperatures around 30 °C, frost can be expected on vegetation, metal surfaces and vehicles.

The cool weather continues

Highs on Thursday and Friday will generally be in the 60s. That means overnight lows will drop into the 30s and 40s, bringing the risk of frost every morning for the rest of the work week.

Temperatures will drop to 20 to 30 degrees tonight, which could lead to crop failures. Take measures to protect sensitive vegetation.

We are now mid-October, which means peak fall foliage is on the horizon! The Greenbrier and areas west of the Blue Ridge will experience moderate to high cover of fall colors this weekend.

Elsewhere, subtle touches of color are slowly added. Peak fall color is expected to occur in the next 1-2 weeks. Now that Virginia's Blue Ridge Parkway has reopened, get out and do a little leaf peeping!
