Las Vegas prepares for temperature plunge after record heat

Slowly but surely, sweater weather is coming to Las Vegas, and a drastic change is coming.

Southwest winds of 15 to 25 mph and a few gusts near 30 mph are possible through late Wednesday afternoon.

Stronger winds are likely Thursday afternoon into Friday with some gusts around 40 mph, particularly in our local mountains.

Significantly cooler temperatures are expected later this week and into the weekend as a strong cold front moves across the region.

Computer models are accelerating this system, leaving the area with little chance of measurable rain and mountain snow.

Rainfall amounts will range from a trace to a few hundredths of an inch.

The last time it rained measurably in Las Vegas was July 13th.

Don't be surprised if the Spring Mountains and Sheep Range see an inch or two of snow at elevations above 8,500 feet.

Temperatures will fall into the mid 80s on Thursday and fall into the upper 60s for highs on Friday. The last time Las Vegas had high temperatures in the 60s was May 5th.

Our storm system will gradually move out through Saturday afternoon, reaching highs in the lower 70s.

Sunday looks fantastic with highs in the 70s with sunny skies and light winds.

WARNING: RED FLAG

A red flag warning is issued for windy southwesterly winds combined with low relative humidity levels from 11am to 8pm on Wednesday.

This means that a fire that develops could spread quickly. Therefore, be particularly careful.

Have fun with the cool changes!
