For the Cleveland Guardians, it's now or never.

At home amidst their cheering fans in the cozy surroundings of Progressive Field, the Guardians will attempt to slow the New York Yankees' seemingly inevitable advance toward the World Series when the clubs play Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Thursday night.

The Yankees secured a 2-0 series lead in New York thanks to a timely pitching performance and the ability to make the Guardians pay for their mistakes. And their bullpen remains virtually impossible to crack: Yankee relievers have posted a 0.77 ERA in 23 ⅓ innings this postseason.

Guardians lefty Matt Boyd will look to pitch as long as possible in his third playoff start, even if that's just three serious innings. Meanwhile, right-hander Clarke Schmidt will look to build on his solid start in Game 3 of the AL Division Series, which tipped Kansas City in the Yankees' favor.

CLEVELAND – Rookie Kyle Manzardo hit his first playoff home run in the third inning on Thursday, giving the Guardians a 2-1 lead over the Yankees in Game 3 of the ALCS at Progressive Field.

Manzardo drilled a 3-1 pitch from Yankees starter Clarke Schmidt 395 feet into the right field seats, giving the Guardians their first lead of the series. Manzardo's home run had an exit velocity of 108 mph and also scored Brayan Rocchio, who led off the inning with a single.

The New York Yankees are proving that it might be a good idea to take a few weeks off from live pitching.

Jose Trevino, who had no offense in the postseason while backing up starting catcher Austin Wells, hit a sharp single to right field in his first plate appearance since Sept. 29, putting the Yankees up 1-0 in the second inning leading ALCS Game 3 in Cleveland.

Trevino started against left-hander Matthew Boyd, while left-hander Wells, who is 2-for-24 this postseason, got the night off. After a one-out walk to Anthony Volpe and a double by Alex Verdugo, Trevino came up and drove Volpe's shot to right.

However, Trevino was batted out at first with Verdugo at third, negating the potential for a bigger inning.

The Yankees got immediate offense early in this series from first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who, after a 15-day layoff due to broken fingers, singled in his first at-bat and struck out three in his first seven at-bats.

After the Yankees stranded a pair in the top of the first, the Guardians managed to put runners on first and second with no one out with a walk by Steven Kwan and a single by Kyle Manzardo. New York starter Clarke Schmidt then struck out Jose Ramirez and got two groundouts from Josh Naylor and Lane Thomas to end the threat.

Game 3 of the ALCS is scheduled to begin at 5:08 p.m. ET on Thursday.
