A tropical storm and depression may form in the Caribbean Sea | Hurricane Center

According to the National Hurricane Center in Miami, a low pressure area in the western Caribbean could develop into a tropical storm or depression this weekend, while another disturbance is in place in the Atlantic Ocean.

As it continues to bring showers and thunderstorms to the northwestern Caribbean, the low pressure area north of eastern Honduras will become better defined, meteorologists said in an update at 7 a.m. Friday. Some further developments are possible the next day. By Saturday, the system could strengthen into a tropical storm or depression as it moves inland over Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico.

Meteorologists believe there is a 50% chance of the disturbance developing within the next two days or next week. Regardless of developments, parts of Central America and southern Mexico are likely to experience heavy rain over the weekend.

Meanwhile, meteorologists are observing another low pressure area in the Atlantic that is producing disorderly showers and thunderstorms. It will move further north of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands at 20 miles per hour on Friday before approaching Hispaniola and the southeastern Bahamas this weekend.

Winds from higher elevations are expected to terminate any further formation. Forecasters said the development of this system would be slow. There is a 10% chance that the problem will develop in the next week.
