Sprint report and highlights from the 2024 United States Grand Prix: Verstappen-Siegel secured the sprint victory in Austin ahead of Sainz and Norris

A little further back, Perez was busy defending himself against Yuki Tsunoda in the fight for P10. Piastri soon joined the fray, but things didn't go his way for the Australian, who was handed a five-second time penalty for previously pushing Pierre Gasly off the track.

This battle eventually led to Piastri finishing tenth at Turn 1 while things got interesting at the front. Sainz was one second behind Norris and Leclerc was now close on his teammate's heels after the previous duels.

As the sprint neared its end, Norris – who appeared to be having problems with his tires – blocked, allowing Sainz to move into second place to the cheers of the crowd, with Leclerc now putting pressure on the McLaren. However, there were no such concerns for Verstappen as he took the win by more than three seconds ahead of Sainz.

Norris managed to hold off Leclerc from third place, while Russell and Hamilton took fifth and sixth, ahead of the Haas cars of Magnussen and Hulkenberg. Perez finished ninth ahead of Piastri, while Tsunoda finished 11th for RB ahead of Williams' Franco Colapinto in 12th.

Lance Stroll took 13th place for Aston Martin, followed by the Alpines with Gasly and Esteban Ocon, the RB with Lawson, Albon and Alonso, while the Kick-Sauber duo Zhou Guanyu and Valtteri Bottas brought up the rear in 19th and 20th place formed. The Finn had stopped in turn 13 at the end of the sprint and his car's brakes appeared to be on fire.
