Purdue Football is shut out by No. 2 Oregon

WEST LAFAYETTE — Fiery Purdue redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Browne walked to the sideline, visibly frustrated, in the second quarter.

It wasn't for lack of effort from Browne, who did everything he could to spark an overall poor first-half performance from the Boilermakers into another defeat, this time against the second-ranked side at Ross-Ade Stadium on Friday night ranking Oregon.

A completed 5-yard pass to Max Klare, which was fumbled and fumbled by Oregon, marked another historically dubious night for Ross-Ade. Purdue was excluded for the first time since 2013.

Browne completed 9 of 19 passes for 95 yards, rushed for 71 yards and threw an interception on his final throw.

More: Ryan Walters had never committed a crime before last week. It's hard to argue with the results.

The Boilermakers did not attempt a pass in the first quarter. And while senior running back Reggie Love III rushed for 93 yards, Purdue systematically struggled to make big gains under head coach Ryan Walters' offensive play.

Purdue scored 37 points in the first half of the season, 21 of them against Indiana State.

Oregon quarterback and Heisman Trophy candidate Dillon Gabriel was unfazed by a four-man pass rush that was fired most of the night by the Duck offensive line led by sophomore center Iapani Laloulu.

Gabriel completed 21 of 25 passes for 290 yards and two touchdowns for Oregon (7-0).

The Ducks entered Friday tied for 89th in red zone offense. Purdue was the cure for its woes, scoring all five touchdowns in the red zone.

A 36-yard field goal attempt missed by freshman Spencer Horath in the second quarter was Purdue's best chance to add points to the field.

Instead of scoring points, the missed kick sparked a chorus of disapproval from Purdue fans.

The Oregon Duck, traveling to West Lafayette, collided with a player during introductions before kickoff and nearly lost his head.

Despite a second-quarter interception by Gabriel and a costume error, the Ducks once again looked flawless.

Purdue, meanwhile, continued its downward spiral with its sixth straight loss.
