At least 7 dead after dock collapses on Sapelo Island

SAPELO ISLAND, Ga. (WTOC) – A McIntosh County Commissioner has confirmed that the Sapelo Island ferry dock collapsed around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon after a boat hit the dock.

According to the Georgia DNR, multiple agencies responded to a gangway collapse at the Marsh Landing Dock.

Officials believe there were at least seven fatalities and several injuries at the time, with at least 20 people falling into the water when the dock collapsed.

Georgia DNR, along with other agencies, used boats and helicopters for search and rescue operations.

This came as many visited the island for Cultural Day 2024, a Geechee Gullah celebration.

The Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalization Society or SICARS hosts the event every fall to celebrate Geeche culture with art, food, crafts, etc Entertainment.

According to the Georgia DNR, the gangway has been secured since Saturday evening and the incident is under investigation.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp released a statement following the dock collapse.

In a social media post, Governor Kemp wrote: “Marty, the girls and I are heartbroken by today’s tragedy on Sapelo Island. As state and local first responders continue to work this active scene, we ask all Georgians to join us in praying for those lost, those still in danger, and their families.”
