The controversial changes of

The number of angry defectors was so large that Bluesky actually stopped working for a few hours, with those fleeing X finding they couldn't log in (and, for that matter, users couldn't even log in). In an update, Bluesky noted that it has now gained half a million new users in the past day.

Analysis: You confuse me

There was a strong reaction to both moves, particularly the blocking change.

However, let's start with the AI side of the equation and what's going on there. Artists are not at all happy about the possibility of their content being used in AI training – which they interpret as “stolen” – but there is an option to opt out (although we don't know what that option is yet) . ).

Still, clearly many people feel that this is a disastrous change in direction for Surely this should be an opt-in decision rather than an opt-out decision, but for obvious reasons this concern is often silenced in the tech industry.

Of course, to be fair to Musk, X isn't the only social media platform taking this route – Reddit is at the forefront when it comes to monetization in the AI space.

However, the change in blocking policy is truly puzzling and seems to be part of Musk's self-destructive side when it comes to his social media properties. We can't think of a good reason why this was enacted except… no. We just can't think of one.

The main argument for the change is greater transparency in detecting such incidents.

But that doesn't fit at all, not even remotely, with the broader and far more pressing concerns that blocked people are now able to behave in harmful ways toward those who blocked them.

While a blocked person may theoretically be unable to repost, there's nothing stopping them from taking a screenshot of a post and sharing it on X (or elsewhere). Or, more generally, nothing prevents the blocked person from using information from the person's visible posts to potentially harass or stalk them.

If you weigh these two factors – the rights of the blocked person and the rights of the blocker – on the scales of concern, the tip is certainly serious.

Another reason for doing away with full banning is that it's easy to get around by creating another dummy account – but not everyone will try this way (far from it, we suspect), and that's just a partial aspect at best argumentation.

All in all, wouldn't at least some kind of compromise be appropriate here? Maybe in the form of some kind of full block option that could stay in.

Reaction to the move has been overwhelmingly negative and hopefully X and Musk take note.

Bluesky certainly takes advantage of this, not only reiterating that it offers full blocking features as mentioned, but also more (such as the ability to “subscribe to block lists managed by trusted users”).

Currently, as mentioned, Bluesky has half a million new contributors to its platform and is currently trending with over 200,000 posts on X. The discussion now turns to how the new blocking philosophy could lead to the X app itself being blocked from the Google and Apple stores.
