Trent Williams of the 49ers was ejected after throwing a hit against the Chiefs

The San Francisco 49ers were significantly shorthanded at the end of their 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.

Not only did they lose Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel to a knee injury and illness, respectively, but they also lost left tackle Trent Williams after he was ejected in the fourth quarter.

Williams' ejection came with 3:03 minutes remaining in the contest. The veteran offensive lineman was on the ground when Chiefs safety Bryan Cook walked up to him and punched him in the facemask.

Williams responded by jumping up and firing a big shot at Cook. He hit Cook in the back of the helmet, drawing a flag and leading to his ejection from the game.

The NFL considers hitting a “prohibited act,” which is considered a form of unsportsmanlike conduct under the league’s rules. NFL officials are allowed to disqualify players for “flagrant” actions when seen by the on-field officials or the replay official, which explains why Williams was ejected from the game.

Cook was not punished for his role in the incident. It's not clear whether officials didn't see his dig at Williams or whether they didn't consider it blatant enough to warrant an ejection or flag.

Whatever the case, Cook stayed in the game after the altercation and was uninjured after absorbing Williams' punch.

In the game between the 49ers and the Chiefs, the atmosphere was already heated after Kansas City receiver Skyy Moore and San Francisco cornerback Deommodore Lenoir got into an exchange after Mecole Hardman's touchdown in the fourth quarter. Cooler heads prevailed after Williams' ejection, and there were no further altercations in the final three minutes of the Super Bowl 58 rematch.
