Following Liam Payne's death, Bruce Springsteen reflects on how the music industry “puts enormous pressure on young people”. The former One Direction member was 31.

Payne died outside a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, local police confirmed Wednesday, after falling from his third-floor balcony at the Casa Sur hotel.

“It’s not unusual in my business,” Springsteen said of the young age at which Payne died in an interview with The Telegraph published Thursday. “It’s a normal thing.”

He added: “Young people do not yet have the inner ability or inner self to protect themselves from many of the things that come with success and fame. So they stray…whether it's drugs or alcohol, to get something out of that pressure.

Payne gained worldwide fame as part of the now-disbanded pop group One Direction alongside Harry Styles, Zayn Malik, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson and later as a solo artist with his hit single “Strip That Down” featuring Quavo.

In recent years, Payne has also spoken openly about his struggles with addiction and the mental health issues he experienced at the height of 1D's fame.

“I understand that very well,” Springsteen added. “I mean, I had my own struggles with different things.”

Police release 911 call made before Liam Payne's death

In a 911 call obtained by Reuters on Thursday, the hotel's front desk manager can be heard asking in Spanish for medical help for “a guest who is intoxicated by drugs and alcohol.” At the times when the guest was “conscious,” he “destroyed the entire room,” the hotel employee also said in the emergency call.

The operator then confirms the hotel's location before the employee adds: “They need to send someone urgently because, well, I don't know if the guest's life is in danger. He has a room with a balcony. And, well, we're a little afraid that he's going to do something that puts his life at risk.”

What was Liam Payne's cause of death?

Argentina's National Penal and Correctional Prosecutor's Office No. 16 said in a news release Thursday that Payne died of “polytrauma” and “internal and external bleeding” after falling from his third-floor balcony.

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, said the press release translated from Spanish into English. However, prosecutors believe Payne was alone when the fall occurred.

Liam Payne's father visits the spot where his son died

Pop star Liam Payne's father, Geoff Payne, visited the balcony at a hotel in Buenos Aires from which his son fell to his death.

Prosecutors said the autopsy was conducted based on five witness statements from three hotel employees and two women who were in his room with the musician but said they left the hotel before the singer's death.

According to the statement, Payne's body was taken to a morgue where an autopsy was performed late Wednesday night and forensic experts determined that “25 injuries described in the autopsy were consistent with those caused by a fall from a height.”

Prosecutors said his brain injuries were “sufficient to cause death,” while “internal and external bleeding” in the head and torso also contributed to his death.
