NJ Transit app and online ticket sales available again after outages on Tuesday morning

NJ Transit says service has been restored to its mobile app and online ticketing system after both went down during rush hour Tuesday morning.

Users trying to use the app received error messages such as “data loading failed” and “server connection timed out.” By 8 a.m., every bus and rail line on NJ Transit's website was showing an “alert” status, even though most had no specific alert information. Minutes earlier, most or all lines were reported to be on time.

A spokesman said around 8:45 a.m. that service would be restored.

The night before the outages, NJ Transit's X-Feed showed a new mobile app update that color-coded trains to Hoboken and to New York City in the app's “DepartureVision” view. A brief statement from a spokesperson about the outages did not address whether Tuesday morning's problems were related to the update.

Due to ongoing infrastructure problems, NJ Transit riders endured a hellish summer of delays and canceled trips. NJ Transit and Amtrak — owners of the tracks used by NJ Transit north of Trenton — have blamed each other for the problems, but both companies say they are working together on increased inspections and better coordination.

This story has been updated to reflect the status of the service
