Get safety tips for Healthy Carson City: Halloween and Nevada Day Parade.

As Halloween approaches, the Carson City Sheriff's Office and the Carson City Health and Human Services Department want to remind everyone to stay safe while having fun. Here are some important tips to keep in mind when trick-or-treating:

• Check treats carefully. Always inspect sweets and treats for tampering or choking hazards before eating. Stick with factory-packaged treats and avoid homemade products from people you don't know.

• Stay in groups. Children should trick-or-treat with friends or a trusted adult. Never allow a child to enter a home unsupervised and only visit well-lit homes.

• Be visible. Add reflective tape to costumes and bags to ensure drivers can see you. Carrying a flashlight or glow sticks also helps.

• Use zebra crossings. Cross the street at designated corners and make eye contact with drivers before crossing.

• Walk, don't run. Stay on sidewalks and avoid walking from house to house to prevent trips and falls.

• Wear safe costumes. Make sure costumes, masks and shoes fit properly to avoid visibility obstructions or accidents.

For those celebrating Nevada Day at the parade, the Sheriff's Office also offers the following tips for a safe and enjoyable experience:

• Arrive early. Get there early to secure a good, safe spot. Plan your exit route to avoid heavy foot traffic at the end of the parade.

• Keep your children safe. Teach young children to turn to a deputy if they get lost, and arrange a meeting point with older children in case they become separated.

• Park smartly. Choose parking spots where you won't be stuck in traffic after the parade.

• Stay behind barriers. Always stay behind designated security barriers and report any suspicious activity to authorities.

• Use alcohol responsibly. If you plan to drink alcohol, make sure you have a designated driver.

• Pack food and water. Due to crowds, access to restaurants or shops may be limited, so bringing your own snacks and water is a wise decision.

• Dress appropriately for the weather. Be prepared for everything from sun to rain to snow. Don't forget sunscreen.

By following these tips, you can safely enjoy Halloween and Nevada Day with your friends and family.
