49ers WR Deebo Samuel is in the hospital with pneumonia

That's scary.

Deebo Samuel missed most of the 49ers' 28-18 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs due to an illness that head coach Kyle Shanahan said is technically pneumonia. This means Samuel has fluid in his lungs, is in the hospital and there is currently no timetable for his return.

“He's still in the hospital and we'll see how he recovers here over the next few days,” Shanahan said in a conference call Monday.

It sounds like Samuel has a chance to play against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday night, but it's unclear what his chances are. Even in the healthiest young men, pneumonia can take one to two weeks to clear up, and symptoms can last a month or longer.

The 49ers are currently decimated at wide receiver. In addition to Samuel's illness, Brandon Aiyuk is out for the season with a torn ACL and ACL, Jauan Jennings is out with a hip injury that could sideline him against the Cowboys, and Chris Conley is out with a sprained ankle. That means the 49ers' healthy wide receivers are Ricky Pearsall, Ronnie Bell and Jacob Cowing. Yikes.

Samuel, 28, has 20 catches for 335 yards in six games this season. He missed Week 3 with a calf injury and was limited in practice last week with a wrist injury. He is under contract through 2025 and the 49ers will likely have to keep him since Aiyuk will likely miss the start of next season.
