The ACLU of Alabama is hosting a food drive to encourage voter registration

TUSKEGEE, Ala. (WSFA) – With only one day left to register to vote in Alabama, the American Civil Liberties Union has been working with local farmers to encourage people to register to vote.

“We recognize that there is a lot of voter apathy across the state simply because people just need assistance for their basic needs,” said Kenya Shavers, voting rights coordinator for the ACLU of Alabama.

The ACLU wants to ensure that people not only vote in elections, but also that all of their needs are met and addressed. Therefore as part of their Project MOVEwhich stands for “Making Our Voices Echo,” the nonpartisan program hosted a food drive Shady Grove blueberry patch in Tuskegee. However, this food drive was unlike any other.

“The ACLU is joining us today to ensure residents have the opportunity to get fresh food,” he said Fresh greens market Co-founder Erica Washington. “Everything is better fresh, and what we know about medicine, food is medicine. So if we want to live, be healthy and alive, we need living and vibrant foods.”

For Michael Adedeji, a Tuskegee conceptual biology student who moved here from Nigeria just two months ago, it was a beautiful thing to see.

“Most of what they give is natural material that can also strengthen our immune system to fight diseases in this society. So I am very happy to be here and see how things are going,” Adedeji said.

The best part? Everything there, from products to massage therapy to baked goods and more, was completely free.

The ACLU encourages you to check your voter registration status, and you can do so at Alabama Secretary of State website.
