Harvey Weinstein was diagnosed with leukemia behind bars in New York

Harvey Weinstein's medical problems are getting worse as he has now been diagnosed with leukemia, TMZ has confirmed.

The disgraced Hollywood film producer suffers from chronic myeloid leukemia, a type of cancer that begins in the blood-forming cells of the bone marrow, according to the American Cancer Society.

Weinstein's representative, Juda Engelmayerand his lawyer, Arthur Aidaladeclined to discuss the new diagnosis, but they released a joint statement… “Craig Rothfeld, Mr. Weinstein's authorized health representative in New York State, expresses his deep dismay at the speculation surrounding Mr. Weinstein's health Expression.”

They continued: “It is both concerning and unacceptable that such private and confidential health matters have become the subject of public discussion and speculation. Out of respect for Mr. Weinstein’s privacy, we will have no further comment.”

NBC was first to report the news, adding that Weinstein was being treated for the illness at Rikers Island. Weinstein is being held at the prison complex awaiting a retrial in his sexual assault case in New York.

As we reported, Weinstein's Manhattan case was overturned on appeal after he was convicted in 2020 of raping an aspiring actress and sexually assaulting a production assistant. The judge sentenced him to 23 years in prison.

But Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg decided to retry the two accusers' case and even announced a new indictment in September charging Weinstein with the third sexual assault of a woman in a Lower Manhattan hotel.

Additionally, in 2022, Weinstein was convicted of raping a woman in a Beverly Hills hotel and sentenced to 16 years in a California prison. He also faced a mountain of civil lawsuits alleging rape and sexual assault.

In addition to his legal troubles, Weinstein has struggled with a variety of health issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, spinal stenosis and fluid in his heart and lungs.

In September, he was taken to the hospital to undergo major heart surgery after feeling chest pains while in prison. During another hospital visit, he became ill with COVID-19 and double pneumonia, requiring further medical attention.
