Obama rallies voters for Kamala Harris in Detroit before Huntington Place is full

Tuesday was part rally, part concert as a closing argument for Democrats working to support Michigan for Kamala Harris.

Detroit superstar Eminem got a rockstar welcome with his game face as he supported Harris and introduced the headliner – former President Barack Obama.

Obama walked to a crowd of 13,000 Harris supporters at Huntington Place downtown.

Obama said he wasn't one of those people who gets nervous before rallies, but found an exception tonight when he took over the microphone from Slim Shady as we moved into campaign mode.

The 44th president admitted he doesn't normally “get nervous, but I felt like I was kind of following Eminem,” Obama joked before launching into the opening lyrics of Eminem's hit “Lose Yourself.”

Then he got down to business and spoke of unity.

“Donald Trump wants us to believe this country is hopelessly divided between us and them,” he said. “And he does this because he knows how to divide and make people angry, which increases his chances of getting elected.”

Obama also talked about voting – playing up his previous theme of “hope” by adding that voting was a must.

“I know I'm the 'Hope' guy,” he said. “But don't just 'hope' – get up off your couch and vote.”

Also speaking at the star-studded event were former Lions star Calvin Johnson, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Senate candidate Elissa Slotkin.
