Sutton Foster files for divorce from husband Ted Griffin after 10 years of marriage

Sutton Foster has filed for divorce from Ted Griffin, her husband of almost ten years.

The Tony Award-winning Broadway star, 49, filed for divorce from her screenwriter husband, 53, in New York County Superior Court on Tuesday, Oct. 22, according to court records viewed by PEOPLE. The couple has one child together: daughter Emily, 7.

Representatives for Foster and Griffin did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Foster and Griffin tied the knot in October 2014 in Santa Barbara, California, after getting engaged in August 2013. After years of fertility issues, they later welcomed daughter Emily through adoption in the spring of 2016.

Back in October 2020, Foster spoke to PEOPLE about sheltering her husband and daughter outside of New York City amid the COVID-19 pandemic, saying it was “the first time we've all been so focused together.” Time without any of us traveling or having to drive to work every day.”

“Especially breakfast and dinner,” that’s what Younger Alum shared. “We're all sitting at the table and now my daughter is going to ask everyone, 'How was your day?' We all enjoy sitting down and talking and we have made it a really important part of our day that we come together as a family.”

Foster added that the trio is “trying to make the best of this time” and also said that their daughter is “doing really well” because “we're all together.”

In a November 2021 essay for PEOPLE about her adoption journey, Foster said she was “always undecided about whether I even wanted to have children.”

“I was always very career-oriented and growing up with my own mother I had such a difficult relationship… That was never clear to me. I got married in my thirties; It didn't last, but it gave me one thing.” “Was this little inkling that maybe I wanted to have a family,” she added. (Foster was previously married to fellow Tony winner Christian Borle.)

But her relationship with Griffin changed that, she said The Music Man star in her essay.

“When I met my husband, it was the first time I finally thought, 'Oh, I understand. I understand why people have families,'” she wrote.

Foster opened up about her relationship with Griffin in an April 2015 interview with Broadway.com, revealing that he took her to Turks and Caicos for a “perfect” 40th birthday getaway.

Speaking about her “very talented” husband's career, she added: “He's the smartest guy I've ever known. He’s incredibly smart.”

Foster said they enjoy going to the theater and watching movies together. And while Griffin showed off her “classic like.” rear windowThe actress said she introduced him to “more silly” films.

“I’m trying to tone down his intelligence a little,” she joked.
