José Mourinho makes sarcastic remarks at referee after red card against Manchester United | Jose Mourinho

José Mourinho sarcastically described Clément Turpin as “one of the best referees in the world” after the Fenerbahce coach was sent off during his side's 1-1 draw with his former club Manchester United.

Mourinho was shown a red card after protesting when he said his side should have been given a penalty in the second half after Youssef En-Nesyri canceled out Christian Eriksen's opener. He watched the rest of the game from the stands but revealed afterwards that he had been to Turpin to ask about his sending off.

“The referee said something unbelievable to me,” Mourinho said. “He said at the same time that he could see what was happening in the penalty area and my behavior on the sideline.

“I congratulate him because he is absolutely incredible. During the game, 100 miles an hour, he had an eye on the penalty situation and an eye on my behavior on the bench. That’s the explanation he gave me and that’s why he’s one of the best referees in the world.”

He added: “I think the best thing I can do when I leave Fenerbahce is to go to a club that doesn't take part in Uefa competitions. So if in the next two years a club in England that's at the bottom of the table needs a manager, I'm ready to go. I don’t want to say anything else – we played absolutely fantastic against a team that was far superior.”

United have now passed exactly a year since their last win in Europe and have rattled off three straight draws to start their Europa League campaign.

Erik ten Hag was happy with his team's performance but admitted he was disappointed not to get all three points.

“Of course, when you take the lead, something like this (draw) shouldn’t happen,” said the Dutchman. “We had chances to score a second goal. Disappointed not to win. We have to win games at Old Trafford.”

Asked if he would like to face Fenerbahce again in the final, he added: “It would be a very good final. We should keep the ball better in the first half. We should score more goals, but to be honest they created good chances. They caused us some problems. They are a good team with a good manager. That's not a bad point. But we want to win. We want to win every game.”
