Mitchell Santner was the star for New Zealand as India lost nine wickets for just 106 runs on the second day of the second Test in Pune. New Zealand got off to a fast start, although Washington Sundar and Ravichandran Ashwin took a couple of wickets before Tea. The visitors were 85/2 at the break and led by 188 runs.

India were all out for just 156 in reply to New Zealand's 259, conceding a 103-run lead in the first innings. Santner, who had never previously managed to take more than three wickets in a Test innings, posted figures of 7/53, while Glenn Phillips took two. Pacer Tim Southee got the only wicket of Rohit Sharma towards the end of the first day.

India's middle order collapsed on either side of the drinks break in the first session and never recovered. Shubman Gill appeared to have made a smooth start to the day but Mitchell Santner ended his progress in the 22nd over. Gill fell on 30 off 72 balls and formed a 49-run partnership with Yashasvi Jaiswal for the second wicket. Virat Kohli soon followed, missing a full toss from Santner and losing his stumps. This brought Rishabh Pant out to keep Jaiswal company. However, this resistance didn't last long as Jaiswal was dismissed by Glenn Phillips straight after the drinks break. Phillips then caught Pant as well when the Indian batsman tried to hit a big, ugly shot over the line and missed the ball completely.

India resumed their batting of 16/1 on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand in Pune on Friday. They batted 11 overs on the first day, at the end Jaiswal had six runs and Gill ten. Rohit Sharma's wicket was the only one India lost, with skipper Tim Southee falling for a nine-ball duck.
