Walmart employee 'locked' in store oven before his death: emergency audio

More disturbing details have emerged after a 19-year-old Walmart employee was found dead in the store's walk-in oven over the weekend.

In about 90 seconds of 911 call recordings published Tuesday by the Daily Mail, a dispatcher tells colleagues about a request to help a woman “trapped in an oven in the bakery” at a Walmart in Halifax, Nova Scotia .

“The oven is on, I don’t know if the staff can turn it off,” they relayed.

Another dispatcher later told his colleagues, “The person trapped in the…on their…we turned off the power for that, would the staff want to turn off the power?”…If we make contact.”

In response, a separate emergency dispatcher said the woman was “out of the oven upon arrival” and law enforcement was handling the matter.

On Tuesday, the city of Halifax released a statement telling the public that regional police are investigating the incident along with the Canadian Center for Occupational Health and Safety and the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service.

The statement said the multi-agency investigation was “complex” and could “take a significant amount of time” to resolve.

Although the city's statement did not name the deceased, a GoFundMe appeal by a Maritime Sikh Society executive identified her as Gursimran Kaur, an Indian citizen.

According to a report by India-based news portal NewsX, both Kaur and her mother had been employed at Walmart for two years.

In a statement released Tuesday, Walmart spokeswoman Amanda Moss told ABC News, “Our deepest thoughts go out to our associate and his family.”

“Our focus remains on taking care of our employees and ensuring they have the support they need,” Moss said. “Our store will remain closed until further notice.”
