LeBron James and son Bronny are charged with negligence over a 2022 car accident

LeBron James and his son Bronny James made headlines once this week when they played together for the Los Angeles Lakers, but now they're back on the roster. This time because of a car accident.

In a lawsuit obtained by TheWrap, April Almanza Lopez and Kiara Rae McGillen claim they were in a car accident with the father-son NBA players in November 2022. The lawsuit alleges that the couple “negligently owned, controlled, repaired, entrusted, and maintained a car that caused it to be involved in an accident or collision – and that is what happened.”

Bronny and LeBron are being sued for negligence and liability for their roles in the accident, and a jury trial has been requested. The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages, medical expenses, loss of earnings/income and court costs.

McGillen claims she was driving Lopez's car when they were struck by a second vehicle on Pearblossom Highway in Littlerock, California. The plaintiffs state in the lawsuit that they have “suffered personal injuries that have caused and will continue to cause pain, discomfort and physical disability” and that they “have employed and will continue to employ physicians, surgeons and others for examinations, treatment and care will keep us busy.”

The lawsuit also states that Lopez's car was so damaged “that repairs were necessary” and that she was no longer able to use the vehicle after the accident.

The plaintiffs are seeking unspecified damages and are represented by the law firm of Larry H. Parker. A court hearing is scheduled for February 19, 2025.

The lawsuit comes the same week that LeBron and Bronny appeared in court together in the first game of the Lakers' season. The season opener was against the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Lakers won 110-103. The elder James posted on Instagram that his son joined him on the court after the win.

“With all my heart and soul,” he wrote. “I will never forget this moment for the rest of my life.”
