Kevin Kline says the secret to his marriage to Phoebe Cates is not living in Hollywood

Kevin Kline and Phoebe Cates have been married for over 35 years – and the actor attributes the success of their relationship to the long distance between them and Hollywood.

In conversation with Business Insider In a story published on Thursday, October 24, Kline, 77, shared how he and Cates, who played the lead role Fast times at Ridgemont High And gremlins, Keep your marriage fresh after so many years and so much time in the entertainment industry.

“If your marriage lasts longer than six months, you are already married Guinness Book of Recordswhen you have a Hollywood marriage,” Kline joked to the outlet on the red carpet for the AppleTV+ premiere Disclaimer at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

According to the Oscar winner, he and Cates do not have a “Hollywood marriage” as they lived on the Upper East Side of Manhattan for most of their relationship. Kline also joked that he meant it figuratively, since he and the former actress didn't consider themselves celebrities in the traditional sense of the word.

“That’s why you won’t see Botox. These are my lips, what’s left of them,” Kline joked.

Additionally, Cates' support for him over the years is one of the main reasons their relationship has remained so strong.

“Unlike me, she has her head on her shoulders. I usually have my head on her shoulders too. She's a great wife, a great mother, a great person, and she keeps me honest,” he said, before joking, “Except for in interviews.”

The couple met at an audition in 1982 and married seven years later in a private ceremony in New York. They welcomed two children – son Owen, born in 1991, and daughter Greta, born in 1994 – and raised them in the city.

When her children reached elementary school age, Kline revealed that Cates decided to retire from acting and instead focus on her New York clothing boutique.

“We agreed to take turns so we never had to work at the same time,” Kline said in 1998. “Whenever it was her place to work, Phoebe chose to stay with the children.”

“She loved acting while she was doing it, but she wasn't as driven by it as I was,” he added.

Although she retired from acting, Cates, Kline and their children appeared in Cates's Fast times Co-star Jennifer Jason-Leigh The anniversary party in 2001.

Kline once joked that he had some doubts about their compatibility after their first meeting Weekly entertainment In 2002, he feared she was “too happy” for him.
