NHL fines Philadelphia Flyers forward for elbow strike

The NHL's Department of Player Safety has fined Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway following an elbow strike incident against the Minnesota Wild. Hathaway was fined $5,000 for his hit. He was also assessed a minor two-minute penalty for the play.

According to the NHL, the elbow occurred in the second period when Hathaway took a roughing penalty on Joel Eriksson Ek.

Hathaway attracted quite a bit of attention from the Wild when they met. There was a scrum late in the third period and Hathaway found himself at the center of the action. Hathaway jumped into the pile and grabbed Eriksson Ek.

Hathaway put Eriksson Ek in a headlock and received a few unprotected punches. This exchange coupled with the elbow bump incident resulted in the Wild being unhappy with Hathaway's actions.

Wild forward Marcus Foligno spoke about Hathaway and wasn't afraid to put his skills to the test.

“That’s what he has to do to stay relevant in this league,” Foligno said.

In the end, the Flyers won the competition 7-5. Hathaway didn't score a point in the win, but Eriksson Ek had a goal and an assist.

The 2024-25 season will be Hathaway's second season in Philadelphia. He played in all 82 games last year and scored seven goals with 10 assists for a total of 17 points.

A $5,000 fine is the maximum penalty allowed under the NHL's collective bargaining agreement.
