At the buzzer: Indiana 66, Tennessee 62 – In the hall

Quick thoughts on a 66-62 win at Tennessee:

How it happened

It was an ugly start to the Sunday show Sunday afternoon at the Food City Center in Knoxville. Indiana turned it over on its first four possessions. Luckily for the Hoosiers, the Vols also got off to a rough start, scoring just two points in the first four-plus minutes of play. IU found its footing after the sloppy start and built an 8-2 lead at 16:16. That would be the biggest lead either team had in the first 20 minutes. The Hoosiers and Vols shot just 3 of 31 from long range in the first half, which also included three technical fouls. Point guard Myles Rice was the clear bright spot for Indiana. The Washington State transfer scored a total of 10 points in 16 first-half minutes. Indiana trailed 26-25 at halftime despite scoring just 0.641 points per possession.

The number of points increased at the start of the second half. At the first media timeout at 3:16 p.m., Tennessee's lead was 41-37. The Vols went 6 of 8 from the field before halftime and Indiana was 4 of 7, including two 3-pointers. Tennessee's lead remained at four — 48-44 — until the under-12 media timeout as the teams continued to trade buckets. Mackenzie Mgbako, who went scoreless in the first half, had 10 points in the first 7:15 of the second half. By the media timeout under eight, Tennessee's lead remained at four at 54-50.

The Hoosiers took a 55-54 lead on a 3-pointer from Malik Reneau with 6:21 to go and extended it to three at 57-54 on another score from Reneau with 5:47 to go. A 3-point play by Reneau extended the IU lead to 60-54 with 4:17 left. After the Vols got within one goal at 60-59, Rice's jumper from the left wing gave IU a 62-59 lead with 1:38 left. After Zakai Zeigler shared two free throws, Rice found Reneau for a dunk with 1:02 left, giving IU a 64-60 lead. Zeigler hit two free throws to make it 64-62 for Indiana with 33.8 seconds left. Tennessee fouled Rice, who made one of two free throws to make it 65-62. Zeigler missed a 3-pointer on Tennessee's next possession and the Vols were forced to foul Rice, who made one of two free throws with 10.4 seconds left to make it 66-62. Tennessee turned the ball over on its final possession and IU dribbled to victory until the clock ticked.

Outstanding artists

Rice and Reneau were the clear standouts for the Hoosiers. IU's new point guard finished the game with 20 points and four assists. Reneau, a junior, led the Hoosiers with 21 points and also had eight rebounds.

Statistics that stand out
