Pro-Trump comedian who told Puerto Rican joke at Madison Square Garden draws criticism from AOC and others

Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe sparked bipartisan backlash when he made a joke about Puerto Rico at Sunday's Trump rally at Madison Square Garden.

“I don't know if you know this, but right now there's literally a floating island of trash in the…ocean,” Hinchcliffe said. “I think it’s called Puerto Rico.”

The Trump campaign quickly distanced itself from the joke. “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign,” Trump senior campaign adviser Danielle Alvarez reportedly noted in a statement.

Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York echoed Hinchcliffe's joke during a Twitch stream with Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

“Who is this idiot?” Walz asked in response to the clip.

Ocasio-Cortez, who noted that her family is from Puerto Rico and she is Puerto Rican, criticized the comedian's joke.

“That’s exactly what they think of you. This is what they think about anyone who makes less money than them. This is what they think about the people who serve them food in a restaurant. “This is what they think about the people who fold their clothes in a store,” the New York Democrat claimed.

According to her congressional website, the representative's mother was “born and raised in Puerto Rico.”

Hinchcliffe responded to the clip of Ocasio-Cortez and Walz, explaining in a post on X that he loves Puerto Rico and vacations there.

“These people have no sense of humor. “It's wild that a vice presidential candidate would take time out of his 'busy schedule' to analyze a joke taken out of context to make it seem racist,” he wrote. “I love Puerto Rico and vacationing there. I made fun of everyone…look at the whole set. I’m a comedian, Tim…maybe it’s time to change your tampon.”

But Ocasio-Cortez hit back at X, scolding Hinchcliffe and accusing him of promoting neo-Nazis.

“You open up to Trump by calling Puerto Rico a floating trash heap. More than 4,000 Puerto Ricans died under him. This isn't the comedy store. You are using your set to encourage neo-Nazis like MTG and to strip women's rights. “Your 'sense of humor' doesn't change that,” she tweeted.

“And before people try to act like this is some overly sensitive PC nonsense, I've been to Kill Tony shows. I'm from the Bronx. I don't give a damn about crude humor. But don’t.” Imagine if your support for Trump was a joke. “It’s a decision,” she added.

Lawmakers accused the comedian of spreading “red racism.”

“I can't get over this guy telling someone else to change their tampons when he's the one throwing rocks into his cave after realizing he's opening up for a Trump rally and “Suggesting red meat racism along with a gaggle of other bigots to a seething crowd “ironically makes you one of them,” she tweeted.

“You don’t love Puerto Rico.” “You like drinking piña coladas. There is a difference,” Ocasio-Cortez added in another tweet.

Democratic Rep. Ritchie Torres of New York also criticized the comedian.

“As a Puerto Rican, I am tempted to call Tony Hinchcliffe racist trash, but that would be an insult to trash. As they cast their votes at the voting booth, Latinos should never forget the racism that Donald Trump seems all too willing to engage in on his platform,” the congressman tweeted.

Republicans also criticized the comedian.

Rep. Carlos Gimenez, R-Fl. tweeted: “This is not a joke. It is completely classless and tasteless. Puerto Rico is the crown jewel of the Caribbean and home to many of the most patriotic Americans I know. @TonyHinchcliffe is clearly not funny and definitely does not reflect my values or those of the Republican Party.”

Representative Anthony D'Esposito, a Republican from New York, wrote: “I am proud to be Puerto Rican. My mother was born and raised in Puerto Rico. It is a beautiful island with a rich culture and an integral part of the USA.” . The only thing that was “garbage” was a bad comedy set.
