Water main shuts down roads and disrupts service in Hoboken

A major water main break in Hoboken has caused street flooding and road closures, officials said.

Hoboken OEM officials say Clinton Street is closed between 4th Street and 6th Street due to the break. They are asking people to avoid the area.

Veolia Water says teams are on site working to repair the water main. The disruption is causing problems for water customers in the city.

“Crews are working with the Hoboken OEM and City of Hoboken personnel to isolate a damaged 12-inch main at 5th and Clinton that is currently impacting water pressure in the Hoboken system,” said Christopher Halleron, manager for Communications and Community Relations at Veolia. “We will continue to provide updated information regarding these repairs through @VeoliaWaterNJ’s social media platforms.”

New Jersey Transit is routing buses through the affected streets. According to NJ Transit's website, bus route 126 will operate on a detour between Newark Street and 12th Street due to utility work in Hoboken. The buses will use Willow Avenue, 4th Street, Clinton Street, Observer Highway, Washington Street and Newark Street.

Hoboken officials continue to keep residents updated through their social media pages and Nixle alerts. Veolia did not say how long it would take to repair the water main and fully restore service to affected customers.

This is a developing story. Further information will be provided as it becomes available.
