A is silenced by the Mariners' 2-0 loss

The 2024 MLB season is in its tumultuous days and the A's offense took an early vacation tonight.

Previously, they faced Seattle Mariners prospect and Oakland native Bryan Woo, who has dominated the A's all season and the rest of baseball. JP Sears got the better of him and had a strong performance of his own in the final game, but he only made a few more errors, which cost him and the A's.

Overall, the M's took a 2-0 win as the pitching dominated the day. It's the 14th time the A's have been suspended this season, and hopefully their last, with just two games left.

In the second game, Seattle drew first blood when Mitch Garver blasted a 92 mph fastball over the centerfield fence for a solo bomb. In the third period, Cal Raleigh made it 2-0 with a solo shot to left center. Woo, the M's pitcher tonight, would do everything in his power early on to make sure the A's offense never faltered on the other side.

Woo recorded six of his first nine outs via strikeout and totaled eight outs in five shutout innings, a new career high. The A's had just three singles against Woo, who now finishes 2024 with 21.2 innings pitched against the Green and Gold, allowing just two runs and a strikeout of 23.

Sears would last longer than Woo, throwing six innings while giving up four hits, two runs and four strikeouts. He left two throws right in the middle of the plate and both were thrown over the fence, which made the difference in today's affair.

The Sears' final record this season: 11-13 WL, 180.2 IP, 32 GS, 1.22 WHIP and 4.38 ERA. It's a shame tonight's offense couldn't help Sears finish his solid 2024 season with a better result, even though he definitely deserved it.

And that's pretty much all of the positive takeaways from tonight. After Sears' good start, fellow southpaws Hogan Harris and Scott Alexander pitched impressive innings in relief. Not to be outdone, the Mariners' pen allowed two hits and six strikeouts in four scoreless innings.

The A's struck out 14 times and recorded just five hits – four of them singles – as their offense still hasn't hit a home run since Sept. 18 at Wrigley Field. Since then, they have averaged 2.5 runs per game.

In the ninth, Tyler Soderstrom led off the inning with a double and immediately moved to third on a wild pitch, but strikeouts to Daz Cameron and Zack Gelof and a groundout ended the rally empty-handed. An A's offense that impressed many in the second half of this 2024 season has faltered and been disappointing of late.

160 down and two more left. Joey Estes will make his final start tomorrow at 6:40 PM PDT and as it stands right this second, the Mariners have yet to announce their counterpart.
