A Vegas local ready to rock “When We Were Young.”

LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — The Las Vegas Festival Grounds is ready to rock again as the “When We Were Young” music festival returns to the Valley for the third year.

The line-up includes bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy and Jimmy Eat World.

You can also check out Silverstein, hosted by Las Vegas native Shane Told. He told me the band was in the midst of “the biggest 10 days of our career.”

“Living here in Vegas, I'm expected to pick up packages, throw parties, do interviews and everything, and I'm happy to do it,” Told said with a smile on his face.

He remembers the first year of the festival and how many people were in disbelief that it was actually happening.

“We were one of the first bands booked for the inaugural year two years ago. I remember when it was announced everyone thought it was too good to be true. People thought it was fake,” Told said. “If you know Fyre Fest, a lot of people have talked about it like that. I literally had to do interviews to reassure people that it was actually real.”

But before the band takes the stage at the When We Were Young Festival this weekend, they're hosting a much smaller show with just 300 fans at a local American Legion Post.

“When I first moved to Vegas I wanted to go to a local hardcore show and I stumbled upon this place. “When I walked in, it felt like I was in 1996, and it was super cool, old-school, and felt great.” Narrated explained. “I just had this thought that I would like to play here with Silverstein at some point would, just because it feels like we did at the beginning of our career… a small stage, no barricade, a small chant.” PA, sweaty as hell And then, the next day, back to a huge production, video screens and all that stuff. It's really fun that we can do both in a short amount of time.

The band was originally formed in Burlington, Ontario, Canada in 2000. Told is a huge hockey fan and this week the Vegas Golden Knights gave the band a special opportunity in honor of Emo Knight – to turn on the siren.

“This thing is like you really have to step on the gas,” Told said. “I’ve never had the opportunity to do something like this at my home Toronto Maple Leafs building. Being welcomed here as a local and being able to do something really special with a great hockey team in a great building was really, really cool and the most fun I've had in a long time.

This is not the only place where you can discover Told.

He is one of many musicians who lead tours of the Punk Rock Museum.

“Fat Mike from NOFX, a very old friend of mine, came here, moved here and opened the museum. It’s just one more thing that legitimizes everything that happens in Las Vegas,” Told said. “If you look at the schedule of people they come through, just showing people around, it's like absolute punk rock legends. You can also go in, pick up guitars like Joe Strummer's guitar or Tim Armstrong's guitar and play them through your amplifier. What other museum can you do that in?”

And Told's favorite piece in the museum is a unique item that belonged to Strummer, a co-founder and lead singer of The Clash.

“It’s the last bag of weed Joe Strummer ever had. Somehow she was kept. He got on a plane, couldn't take it with him, gave it to a friend who wasn't going, and it ended up in the museum.”

Told said he has settled well in Las Vegas with his partner and their lizard and is happy to finally put down roots.

“For the last two and a half decades I have lived everywhere. I have lived in different cities. I lived on the streets. I lived in apartments. I lived in vans. Now, “To finally be able to be in a place that I can call home, it just feels so good to be here in Las Vegas,” Told said. “So many of my friends live here now and it's just great to see Las Vegas getting a little more respect for being a real place and not just a place where there are hotels that look like castles and pyramids, and it is a playland for adults.” “
