Anne Hathaway returns royally to Genovia as Princess Mia Thermopolis in “The Princess Diaries 3.”

The Oscar-winning actress confirmed in an Instagram post on Friday that she would be reprising her iconic role in the prequel to the popular film series.

“Miracles do happen,” she posted a video with a screenshot of a news article announcing that the film was in further development, which was first reported by Variety. Hathaway counted down in the video, which included clips from the first “Princess Diaries,” and said her famous line from the film: “Shut up!”

Variety, which said the film has been in development since 2022, announced that Adele Lim, who wrote the screenplay for “Crazy Rich Asians,” is set to direct the film, with Hathaway set to star. The upcoming prequel is the third installment in the popular series, following 2001's The Princess Diaries and 2004's sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

“As a die-hard fan of the original 'Princess Diaries,' I'm thrilled to be part of bringing the third installment of this beloved franchise to life,” Lim said in a statement to Variety. “We look forward to celebrating its core values of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences around the world.”

The Princess Diaries was one of Hathaway's first roles

Hathaway, who is now 41 years old, landed the role of Princess Mia when she was 17.

In April, she told V Magazine that development on “The Princess Diaries 3” was “in good shape,” adding at the time: “That's all I can say. There is nothing to announce yet. But we are in good condition.” ”

She also told V that her “first big film role, the second film I ever did, was 'The Princess Diaries.'” I was so generously invited into this process by Garry Marshall; he valued my teenage girl attitude and elevated me to such valued status on set that it never occurred to me on other sets that I didn't have the same autonomy. “

There's no word on whether Julie Andrews, who portrayed Princess Mia's grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi, will return to the franchise. In December 2022, she told Access Hollywood's Kit Hoover she wasn't sure if that was possible.

“I think we know it probably won’t be possible,” Andrews said at the time. “It was discussed shortly after two pieces were published, but how many years have passed since then? And I'm so much older and Annie, the princess or queen, is so much older. And I'm not sure where it would swim or run to,” Andrews added.

She continued: “As for us, I very much doubt it now.”
