AEW's Anthony Bowens faces Jose Canseco in the upcoming Homerun Derby

AEW fans know Anthony Bowens can scissor, but now they have a chance to watch him rake. On Sunday, Bowens announced he will face former MLB slugger Jose Canseco and others. The Going Yard Home Run Derby on October 5th in Sugar Land, TX.

“It's OFFICIAL,” Bowens wrote on X, “The Scissor King will represent @AEW on October 5th at the @JoseCanseco GOING YARD HOME RUN DERBY in Sugar Land, Texas.”

The event will take place at Constellation Field, home of the Sugar Land Space Cowboys of the Pacific Coast League. According to a press release from the Space Cowboys The Going Yard Home Run Derby will be played in the traditional derby format. In addition to Bowens and Canseco, former MLB stars Andruw Jones and Rafael Palmeiro, former NFL wide receiver Antonio Brown and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel will also compete.

Earlier this month, Bowens challenged Canseco on social media, saying: “I'm the Scissor King, I'm the five-tool player of wrestling and I know you're never going to show up and fight me in AEW. dynamite. So I challenge you. October 5th, Sugar Land, Texas. Do you still have the balls from the 90s to take my challenge? I bet you don't. Jose, it's time to get your act together or shut up. Why? Because everyone loves The Acclaimed.”

Last week, Bowens posted a video of himself taking batting practice and showing off his swing. Before becoming a professional wrestler, Bowens was a standout baseball player at Nutley High School in New Jersey. He played two seasons each at Montclair State and Seton Hall University and previously worked at the MLB Network, where he shot production footage.

In 2017, Bowens spoke to New Jersey's The Record about his transition from the diamond to the ring. Bowens said, “When I finished my baseball career, something was missing. I had a second passion, which was professional wrestling. So I decided to take the plunge and started training in 2012.”

Since then, the celebrated star has won the AEW World Tag Team Championship with his partner Max Caster. Along with Caster and WWE Hall of Famer Billy Gunn, Bowens also held the AEW World Trios title. Now he's looking to add the title of Home Run Derby champion to his sporting career.
