Alabama's controversial fourth down cost Vols final drive

It is often said that football is a game of inches.

In a highly anticipated matchup between Tennessee and Alabama on Saturday, the Crimson Tide may have gotten a few more at a crucial moment.

Facing a four-and-1 from the Vols' 37-yard line late in the second quarter at Neyland Stadium, coach Kalen DeBoer decided to go for it. Quarterback Jalen Milroe chugged forward to gain the yardage needed to continue Alabama's push.

Whether he actually managed to reach the first down marker is debatable. Tennessee's defensive line seemed to overwhelm Milroe, and many Vols players celebrated as if they had made a critical stop. However, the referee placed the tip of the ball directly on the first down line.

The ball placement sparked some criticism on social media.

The call was ultimately only effective enough that the Tide couldn't gain another yard and missed a 54-yard field goal attempt.

Still, it may have cost Tennessee a better chance to score, as it would have taken the lead at its own 37 with 56 seconds left in the half had the ball been placed elsewhere. Instead, it received the ball at its own 36-degree line with 34 seconds left.

The Vols couldn't score and went into halftime trailing 7-0. It was the third straight game in which Tennessee went scoreless in the first half, the first time since 1963.
