Amazon Prime Video Series Sets Release Date

Amazon Prime Videos Cruel intentions The series has released its first trailer and we get our first proper look at the updated version of the 1999 cult film starring Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe and Selma Blair.

In the clip, we see the centerpiece of the series, the machinations of privileged step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who run Greek life at Manchester College, an elite university in Washington, DC. The couple get into trouble after a hazing incident goes wrong and try to get out of trouble through lies, deception and seduction.

The cast also includes Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, Khobe Clarke, John Harlan Kim and Brooke Lena Johnson. Sean Patrick Thomas, who played Ronald Clifford in the original film, plays Professor Chadwick in this version.

In keeping with the original film, the trailer is set to a cover of The Verve's “Bittersweet Symphony.”

Cruel intentions will be released worldwide on Prime Video on November 21st.

The eight-part series serves as an update of the film, which itself is based on the classic French novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos Les Liaisons Dangereuses. The Prime Video series is at least the third attempt at adaptation Cruel intentions for television. After the film's release, Fox ordered a spin-off series titled Manchester preparation – and then scrapped it before it aired. Two completed episodes were re-edited (and some racier footage added) and converted to direct-to-video functionality Cruel intentions 2 (2000).

NBC gave it a try Cruel intentions series in 2015 and developed a sequel set 15 years after the film, in which Gellar reprized her role as Kathryn Merteuil. The station eventually passed on the broadcast.

Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher serve as co-showrunners, writers and executive producers of the new series. Original Film's Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty are also executive producers alongside Roger Kumble. Moritz produced the original film, which was written and directed by Kumble. Bruce Mellon is producing along with Andrea Iervolino and Monika Bacardi of Iervolino & Bacardi Entertainment.

Sony Pictures Television, Amazon MGM Studios and Original Film produced the series. Sony's Columbia Pictures and Original backed the 1999 film.
