America needs to get Trump out of politics, so I'm voting Harris

The loyalty that Donald Trump demands and shows from his sycophants is frightening.

Election day is just around the corner. We need to make a thoughtful and informed decision soon. There are clearly some risks.

Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are working hard to introduce themselves to voting audiences, especially in swing states. It comforts me that they are both children of middle class America and examples of how one can rise from humble beginnings to the top of political power in America. However, in many ways Harris is still a political mystery. Is she really moving from the far left to the center, away from her stated policy positions in 2019? I hope she learns that most Americans live in the political center, far from the extremes we hear so much about in the national media. Their policy statements and proposals are weak and will be difficult to implement. In particular, $25,000 for new home purchases and $50,000 for new businesses are associated with potentially unintended negative economic consequences.

I would like to believe that both Harris and Walz have an appropriate level of integrity, if that is possible in today's political arena. Harris appears willing to listen to other viewpoints and incorporate them into her vision for the country. Unfortunately, Harris cannot escape the negative consequences of the last three-plus years of her term, namely the Afghanistan withdrawal, immigration, inflation, huge budget deficits and foreign policy turmoil. She wasn't particularly clear about what her deepest beliefs really were and how she would implement a better political agenda.

I want to believe in Harris because Donald Trump is a disaster. Incredibly, Trump continues to tread on his own two feet with his childish name-calling, outlandish statements, and inability to clearly state his point of view. It's very interesting that JD Vance did a better job of making Trump's case in the recent vice presidential debate than Trump himself. But Trump just can't help it. If he had had objective, intellectual discipline, he would have been much more effective in his campaign. If he had even a modicum of humility, honesty and good character, he would probably be a clear winner in this election.

Opinion: In November, voters should consider who best embodies the virtues of a president

Yet even Trump's policy positions appear to be informed by weak economic ideas, suggesting he is in a panic to outdo his opponents and buy votes. Arbitrary tariffs, unnecessary tax cuts, and pandering to special interest groups simply do not represent a well-thought-out and clearly communicated plan for America. Threats to prosecute its political enemies are crazy. The loyalty he demands and displays from his sycophants is shocking.

Finally, let’s not forget January 6, 2021 and Trump’s actions to overturn the 2020 election that led to that despicable day. The legal case may never be decided, but as I have argued, we do not need courts to judge Trump's lack of character, which has been astonishingly on display during this time. Some may argue that the many charges against Trump are politically motivated, but the January 6 case is one of his own actions. The evidence is extensive. I have previously strongly recommended that all Americans read Liz Cheney's book, Oath and Honor, in which she clearly lays out this evidence. The evidence does not come from his political rivals. It comes from the statements of his own employees and his own tweets and other words and actions. Trump's continued lies and these desperate attempts to overturn the 2020 election show the true character of a man obsessed with himself rather than fulfilling his duty to his country.

As a lifelong conservative, I will cross my fingers and vote for Harris despite my concerns about her policies because I firmly believe our country will be better off if we use the ballot box to remove the divisive Trump from the political scene .
